Top Things to Expect During Your Next Roof Replacement Project

May 15, 2025

Getting a new roof for your home can be really exciting as it will enhance its curb appeal and give you more peace of mind about the safety of your family and your home. If this is your first roof replacement project, it's likely that you don't know what to expect. We'll discuss some of the most common steps below so that you can be more comfortable with the overall process.

Consultation

When you decide it's time for a roof replacement, one of our roofing professionals will visit your home. We’ll assess your roof and provide you with various roofing options. There are many different materials available, like shingles, composite, and metal. Each comes in a variety of different colors with varying designs.

Our team can make recommendations based on your individual desires and your budget. We can answer questions about these materials, such as their lifespan or maintenance requirements. This ensures you're better informed when making a decision about which roofing material and design is best for your home. Once you decide on the specific roof you want, we'll provide a free estimate so that you understand the overall cost associated with replacing your roof.

Scheduling

Once you agree to the estimate, we’ll work with you to schedule a time to do the replacement that's convenient for you. Depending on the size of your roof, the replacement process can take anywhere from one to two days on average. It's important to note that weather-related factors, like rain, can result in schedule changes.

Once your roof replacement is on the schedule, you can expect a delivery of roofing materials typically the day before or the morning of your replacement service. It's pretty common for most roofers to have the shingles delivered directly to your home from their supplier for ease of installation. It's also normal to have a dumpster arrive, potentially the day before or the morning of the installation as well.

Prepping Your Property

On your replacement day, our roofers will do a walk-through of your property to establish key areas for things like disposal routes for the old roofing material and identify areas that need to be covered for protection. For example, it's common to use plywood and other materials to cover up susceptible windows, doors, and even your outdoor AC unit to prevent any damage from falling debris. It can be helpful to move any chairs, tables, or other items near your home to allow for adequate space for our roofers to maneuver around your home.

Removing Old Roof

Before your new roof can be installed, the old roofing materials must be removed. It's never a good idea to shingle over existing shingles, as it will put too much weight on your home. This additional weight can stress your home's structural integrity. Our roofers will rip up all your old shingles, underlayment, and flashing and dispose of them in the dumpster. It's common for some roofers to rip off the shingles while others help on the ground, diverting any loose shingles from ending up in your yard or driveway.

Decking Inspection and Repairs

Once all your old roofing material is removed, our roofers will do a thorough inspection of the decking material. This layer, which looks like plywood, is installed on the rafters and acts as a base for the shingles. It's not uncommon for decking to rot over time, especially if you have undetected leaks in your roof.

Before a new roof is installed, it's important to replace any rotted or warped decking with new material. This not only helps to ensure a long lifespan for your new roof but is also required by most manufacturers to keep your warranty active.

Roof Installation

Once all the decking is repaired, it's time to install your new roof. This is done in stages as each component needs to be installed in the right order. The first step is the drip edge, which helps to divert water in a safe direction to your gutter system. Next is the flashing that goes around roof protrusions like your chimney. This works to divert water away from the protrusion and onto your roofing material.

Before your shingles can be installed, underlayment must be placed on top of the roof decking. This is a waterproof material that acts as a secondary layer of protection to keep rain and snowmelt out of your home. Once your entire roof is adequately covered with underlayment, it's time to see the real magic happen.

The shingles are installed row by row, starting at the bottom and working up to the top. During this process, you can expect to hear a lot of noise as the automatic nailing guns adhere your shingles to your roof. We’ll work to minimize the amount of noise. However, do expect some as part of the roof replacement process.

Once all your shingles are in place, the roof capping or venting is installed. This is the last step to protect the peak of your roof from water infiltration and ensure that your attic can adequately breathe throughout the varying seasons. This goes a long way in helping to protect the integrity and longevity of your new roofing materials.

Final Inspection and Cleanup

The last steps of your roof replacement are cleaning up the space and doing a final inspection. Our roofing professionals will clean up all the tarps around your property, use a strong magnet to pick up any loose nails, and blow out your gutters to confirm there's no debris left in them. One of our roofers will walk over your entire roof to make sure every component is installed correctly and nothing was missed during the installation process.

Prepping Your Home

As a homeowner, there are various things you can do to adequately prepare your home for your next roof replacement service. One of the most important things is to ensure there's adequate space for a dumpster and any equipment our roofers use. We recommend relocating your vehicles out of the driveway to a safe location to avoid any damage from roofing materials.

If you have pets outside, consider relocating them to a safe spot indoors during the installation process to protect them from any falling debris. Consider covering any items that you have in the attic to protect them in the event the decking above them needs to be replaced. Make outdoor outlets easily accessible. It can be helpful to be home or plan for another adult to be at your home throughout the replacement process to answer any questions our roofers may have.
